Elmer was a gracious presence who made a difference and friends everywhere he went. I first became acquainted with him over 50 years ago when I worked in Birch Bayh's office. Whenever Elmer came to visit, smiles would break out all around. Years later, I became a lobbyist for educators at the State House, and the smiles also broke out there whenever he came to the 'halls' of the legislature. It seemed everyone had an appreciative story of Elmer's sunny kindness.
Thank you for the detailed obituary of his many contributions to many others. You've told his inspiring story so well. I've shared it with former Bayh staff and on my Facebook page, one of whom said "Wow - I'm sorry I never knew Elmer". I'm so glad I did. Thank you for sharing him with all the rest of us. We loved him too.
