Obituary of Robert "Bob" O'Conner Orendorff

Robert “Bob” O’Conner Orendorff, age 96, Major U.S. Army (retired) died on May 16, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.  Cremation was chosen and a private memorial service will be held.  Scott Funeral Home has been entrusted with his care.  
Bob was born September 23, 1920 in Oaktown, IN, the son of the late Barney and Zina Orendorff.  After high school, he was employed at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation in Aliquippa, PA.  Bob entered the Army in 1942.  He served in the Pacific during WWII as a Sargent for two years and received a direct appointment to Lieutenant in 1945.  He was with the 77th Infantry Division in the Philippines and Okinawa.  When the war ended in 1945, the 77th went to Japan to join the occupation forces.  Bob later served with the 24th Infantry Division in Germany and his last assignment was a senior advisor for the National Guard in Maui for four years until 1963.  Amongst his awards and decorations he valued most was the Combat Infantry Badge given only to those engaged in ground combat against enemy forces and assigned to an infantry division.  Bob was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hawaii; the Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine in Evansville, IN.
Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years and mother of their children, Ruth Jean Orendorff; and a sister, Betty Fry.
Bob was very proud of his children and grandchildren who survive him.  Four daughters and son-in-laws, Patricia (Jim) Sheehan; Barbara (Chris) McKinley; Peggy (Bruce) Leidolf; Kim Flint and good friend David Ross; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
