Obituary of Walter Clive

Walter Clive
97; Jeffersonville, IN

Funeral services for Walter Clive, 97, of Jeffersonville, IN, will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, with a private burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.  He joined his dearly departed wife, Irene T. Clive, on December 8, 2017.

Walt was born at home in Manchester, England on October 1, 1920 to Joseph and Gertrude Clive.  At age four, his family moved from England to Canada, and later to Niagara Falls, New York.  Walt began serving the US even before becoming a US citizen, as did his three brothers, by each joining a different branch of the service. As a British citizen, he proudly served our great country during World War II in the US Army Air Corp.  On April 5, 1944 Gunner Staff Sergeant Walt Clive was shot down and parachuted from a B24 Liberator during the infamous Raid on the Ploesti oil fields.  He then spent five months as a prisoner of war in Romania.  He, along with 1,062 others, became part of the largest mass evacuation of prisoners of war during WWII.  Upon his return to the states, he was proudly sworn in as a US Citizen.

On January 19, 1944, Walt married Irene, the love of his life, and raised three children, throughout their 61 years together.  He was an inspiration to all as he took loving care of Irene during her long suffering with Alzheimer's and Lou Gehrig's diseases.

Walt was respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him.  He began his civilian career as an Electrician at Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation in Niagara Falls, NY.  He retired from the Charlestown, IN Army Ammunition Plant after 20 years and Superintendent of Roads and Services.  Walt was a 50 plus year member of the Niagara Falls LaSalle Masonic Lodge, and a member of Jeffersonville American Legion, VFW, Faith Lutheran Church, and a Kentucky Colonel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene T. Clive; parents, Joseph and Gertrude Clive; and brother, Victor Clive of Youngstown, NY.

He is survived by his three children, Nancy Thompson (Al) of Charlestown, IN, Richard Clive of Jeffersonville, IN and Diana Irene Clive of Utica, IN; brothers, Cyril Clive of Niagara Falls, NY, Duane Clive (Charlene) of Lewiston, NY; seven grandchildren, Carrie Thompson, Shelley Grimes, Robert Clive, Michael Clive, Karen Husband, Walter Morgan Clive, Benjamin Risinger; 11 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and a multitude of cousins in England and Wales.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Jeffersonville's Faith Lutheran Church, American Legion or VFW Post.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
