Obituary of Charles "Rex" Smallwood

A Celebration of Life for Charles “Rex” Smallwood, 85, of Jeffersonville, IN, will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Pkwy, with a luncheon to follow in Scott’s Fireside Suite.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11-3 PM at the funeral home.  He passed away on Monday, December 11, 2017 at Rolling Hills Health Care.   

Rex was born on April 16, 1932 in Henryville, IN, to the late Harold and Martha Smallwood.  He was an Army veteran and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict.  He worked for 30 years at Ford Motor Company before retiring and then worked 20 years for the Jeffersonville Parks and Recreation.  Rex was an extremely active gentleman and played in men's basketball leagues into his 70's.  He loved to swim and was a registered lifeguard until he was 70 years old; spending many summers managing the Ewing Lane pool.  Rex loved helping and giving to people.  He would give anything he owned to a stranger and was known for helping his neighbors and old friends.  He was a special man that will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Dina Guernsey, Gloria Houk, and Betty Smallwood.   

Rex is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Bonnie Jean Wilcoxson Smallwood; three children, Cindy Kern and her husband Randall; Susan Snelling and her husband Mark; Scott Smallwood; three siblings, Gerry Winters and her husband Charlie; Bobby Smallwood and his wife Ellen; Connie Stewart and her husband Ron; five grandchildren, Sarah Weber and her husband Henry Methorst; Zach Snelling; Ashley Smallwood; Cody Smallwood; Ellie Smallwood; and four great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katie, David, and Lydia.   

Memorial contributions can be made to Amedisys Hospice or the charity of your choice.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
