Melissa's memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Scott Funeral Home, 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, IN.

Melissa, passed away unexpectedly 6.17.2018 in Jeffersonville, IN, following outpatient surgery. Also known as Byrd, Melissa was born 12.8.1962 in Scranton, Pa to parents Dr. F. Earl Neufer and Beverly Fuhr Quackenbush, living her childhood years in Montrose, PA. Her favorite memories were from Elk Lake, PA, especially fishing with her father. She was a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt  High School in Greenbelt, MD and had many adventures in working before becoming an administrative assistant for a research pediatrician at Georgetown University Medical Center. Melissa retired from this position after 20 years and relocated to Louisville KY. She was a self-described expert on fashion, home shopping shows, jewelry and had aspirations to become a gemologist.

Melissa struggled her adult life with chronic debilitating health issues which prompted her move into Riverbend Assisted Living Facility in Jeffersonville, IN. The staff at Riverbend took wonderful care of Melissa and her beloved cat Jack. Special thanks to the Riverbend staff, especially Karen, Julia, Melissa, Hope and Alexa. She made many wonderful friends there who added meaning and joy to her life.

Melissa was preceded in death by her parents and a brother John Neufer. She is survived by an uncle Rev. Dale and Judy Neufer of NC, brother Walter and Karen Redel of FL, sister Pam and Kevin Derbin of KY, brother Jeff and Jill Neufer of CO, brother Tim and Cindy Redel of Hong Kong, many Neufer cousins and many nieces and nephews and a great niece and nephew.

Donations can be made to the Spondylitis Association of America for continued research of this crippling disease.
