Obituary of Joseph Lane Rand

Joseph Lane Rand, 91, died Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the Atria Senior Living Center Memory Care unit in Louisville, KY where he had lived for the last year. Joe was born in McCullers, NC on June 1, 1927 to Joseph Rand Sr. and Elva Gaston Rand.

He grew up on a working farm with his younger brother Sam. Joe graduated from Garner High School in 1945. He joined the Army after high school the same year and was sent to Germany where he served as a medical technician during WWII.

After the war, he worked for US Department of Agriculture in New York City where he met and married Dorothy “Skippy” Fenimore (deceased) from New Jersey. They settled in Charlotte where he worked with A&P, Biggers Brothers and US Foods as a produce buyer and food quality inspector. They had two daughters, Susan and Tara.

Joe was a sports enthusiast, especially enjoying football and stock car racing. Every year he looked forward to attending the World 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway with friends. Another activity Joe looked forward to each year was an annual family vacation to Sunset Beach NC. There was always a houseful, adding more members as the family grew to include 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. In later years, he enjoyed several cruises with his wife and other couples.

Joe’s faith was always an important part of his life. He served on the vestry at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church and served as a deacon at Trinity Assembly of God, both in Charlotte. During the later part of his life, he and his wife, Skippy, attended Central Church of God. Joe loved his friends from Norris Links’ Sunday school class.

He is survived by daughters; Susan Rand Hunt (Bobby), of Raleigh, NC, Tara Rand Rowland (Richard) of Louisville, KY, grandchildren; Andrew Hunt (Zinaida) of Carrboro, NC, Zachary  (Jordan) of Asheville NC, Jessie Hunt of Durham NC, Ashlie Morris (Blake) of Lexington KY, Thomas Rowland and Steven Rowland, both of Louisville KY and two great granddaughters, Ajla Hunt and Quinn Hunt; his faithful four-legged companion “Buddy”, now residing with Tara.
