I was in Mr Coomer’s 5th grade class at Eastlawn Elementary back in the 60’s. I moved back to Jeffersonvile in 2012 and had thought just the other day how awesome it would be to go see him and tell him the impact he made on my life. Out of all of the teachers from grade school through college, he is the one that always come to mind. Thank you for your caring, kindness and compassion toward a little girl going through far more at home than any child should endure. My thoughts and prayers for his family for this great loss. Rest In Peace Mr Coomer.

Gene Coomer was a fellow-teacher with my late wife, Connie. He was also my statistician in the many years I broadcast high school football and baseball on WXVW, WAVG and teleSPORT Productions. Gene was one of the most dedicated men I've ever known. Regardless the situation, Gene was totally committed. Everyone, especially the Jeffersonville High School sports program, has lost a great supporter. Rest in peace, my Friend.

After a game Mr. Coomer asked my son, Aaron, how many points he scored. He answered, “only two.” Mr. Coomer then asked how many they won by. My son lit up and answered, “two.” Mr. Coomer smiled and walked away.
It’s amazing how so few words can impact a person’s life. Mr. Coomer was an extraordinary man. He will never be forgotten. Love and condolences from the Valentine Family.

I’ve known Gene Coomer has a fellow colleague in Greater Clark for many years. He was a principal and I was a teacher at different schools. I also worked a couple of games by his side in broadcasting when we would do the Jeff-NA games. I worked w Rival Sports. Always friendly, and was quite the gentleman and so personable. A great guy! I will be out of town next week but my condolences to the family!

Mr. Coomer was a much-loved principal by his student dragons. I remember running into Mr. Coomer when he was a substitute principal at another local elementary in the 1990’s. I ask him what he thought about the corner in Clarksville where the Pep Boys now occupies. He said when he drives by he hated to even look at it, as he missed McCulloch School so much. Though Mr. Coomer has touched countless peoples lives in Clark County, he will always be especially remembered fondly by his McCulloch Dragons!

Mr. Coomer was my 6th-grade teacher at Maple Elementary. He was a great teacher and by far the best that I had in all my school years. I remember all the field trips and the neat things that we learned in his class. He will be missed. "Go Rest High on that Mountain".

Mr. Comet broadcast Jeff High football and kept stats. He always talked to and encouraged the players. He always asked about our son, Andy and kept up with him through his college days. He was truly a special man.

Mr. Coomer was my principal at McCullough from 1987 until he retired. He was a great man and always treated each student fairly. My daughter had the joy of having him as a substitute several times while she was a student at JJ and loved him as well.

Uncle Gene was such a blessing to me, my mom, our family, and pretty much everyone he met. He always had interesting stories to share about adventures in Wartime or things he had done as a child. He had the best memory of anyone I've ever met. I only wish we could have talked more before his passing. He did share with me the tributes he wrote for his high school class reunions and what Jeffersonville was like when he was growing up. He wrote a funny story about a character he created named Igor Coomerjohn that is hilarious. I don't think he ever ever forgot a student he taught or a basketball game he attended. He was a delightful man and I am richer for having known him.

Gene and I became best friends when I was a junior in high school after he agreed to do an interview for a story. He treated me like one of his grandsons and I couldn’t be more thankful for everything he did for me. We always talked at every Jeff basketball game and I know he still won’t miss a game.

Gene has been a wonderful friend. We shared hundreds of ballgames, both as fans
and as broadcasters for TeleSPORT Productions TV and WXVZ radio together with
Ted, Charlie, Gil, Greg, Darrell and others. We all shared many wonderful road trips with too many friends to mention. In recent years we worked less often from the broadcast booth as Gene's health limited his ability to climb to the press box. But we still called in scoring reports and summaries to the station from most games, especially Jeff High's.
Wherever we went we were constantly approached by friends and former students of Gene's. It seemed he knew everyone and was related to most.
One of his fondest memories was the Veteran's Honor Flight. And one of my fondest memories was our tradition in recent years of Sharing Veteran's Day meals at local restaurants.
I look forward to eventually joining Gene and Ted watching games and matches from the highest press boxes.
God bless and God speed Old Friend.
