I met Sylvia my freshman year at Jeffersonville High School. She was a beautiful girl, inside and out, so I, like many people, was instantly attracted to her. As I got to know her better I learned she lived on a dairy farm, a member of a hardworking, very loving family. After a few months at school she became my girlfriend. I lived on the other side of Jeffersonville, and I couldn’t drive a car to see her since I was only 14. As this was the days before cell phones, the home phone was the only way of communicating with her outside of school. It was hard to get in touch with her since she had farm chore duties in addition to homework and school extracurricular activities, and she had a sister and brothers who also had friends who called their house in the early evening. I remember one of the times I was talking to her our conversation was brief as she said she had to go bed. It was around 9PM, and I was shocked she had to go to bed so early. She told me she had to get up very early, around 5AM I think it was, to milk the cows before school. I asked her if she had to get up that early every day, even Christmas? She replied, “Yes, the cows don’t know it’s Christmas”. I’ll stay with the Christmas theme, as it’s the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth, how God sent him to pay for our sins by dying on the cross. And that by putting our trust in what Christ did for us and not in our own “good works”, we are made acceptable to God and will be welcomed into heaven when we die. That’s what gives us comfort as Christians during tough times, especially when our loved ones pass away. We know, not hope, that our families and friends who put their trust in Christ will be reunited one day with Christ in heaven, and we will live together forever. How wonderful that will be.
The Apostle John wrote: 1 John 5:13 “I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. “
Key word here, know. As Christians we have a “know-so” hope.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 the Apostle Paul wrote about how Christ will return some day for the living and the dead, and we will be with the Lord forever, so encourage each other with these words.
I am sorry for your loss and will keep your family in my prayers. I hope fond memories of Sylvia will bring comfort in the years ahead.
