You, the family of Col. John Burbules have our deepest sympathy. We are sorry for your loss. We read John's obituary and we were overcome! Christian ending to his life; painless, Blameless, and peaceful! We can only hope for such an ending. "How John lived was also great to read about; simple, served God, served his country, served his family and friends loved them all endlessly. Sorry I never got to meet John along his way. If we all have met our Lord like apostle Paul did on his way to Damascus, We will get to greet one another in Glory Land.

It's difficult to adequately express what John meant to me - as my Bible Study teacher, my friend, and as my beloved Godfather. He was as kind and dear and sweet from the time I first met him 22+ years ago until the last time I saw him at St. Michael's in his beautiful military uniform that he's wearing in the picture that is on this website.
The major things that people should know about John - he was humble, giving, caring and a devout Orthodox Christian. He taught a variety of classes at church over the years which highlighted his brilliance on any and all subjects. He loved to teach - and talk - and if you didn't know any better, you would have thought that he was a former (and now retired) school teacher who had been excellent at his chosen profession, but had otherwise lived a quiet and uneventful life.
Fortunately, John's life was anything but "ordinary." He was a retired Colonel in the US Army, was highly decorated and had traveled the world. Of course, John wouldn't have told you any of this - he would only say that he had been "honored" to serve his country, and others would be given the task of telling you of his incredible accomplishments. And then, of course, when you saw him proudly wear his military uniform, you knew you were in the presence of a very special (and famous) person.
For as long as I knew him, he would always sit on the far left side of the church, second row from the front. I've recently told friends in neighboring pews that they were so blessed to have been able to celebrate the services by his side. Being in the choir, I rarely was able to talk to John for any length of time in the last few years, but when I was fortunate enough to be on his side of the church after having received Communion, I tried to make it a point - when I could catch his eye - of giving him a hug and a peck on the cheek. He always returned the "favor" and would say, with his sweet smile and a twinkle in his eye, "You just made my day!"
My thoughts and prayers go out to his beloved wife, Pat (whom he always referred to as "my bride"), as well as his incredible children - George, Angela and Catherine - and their children. Thank you and God bless you for sharing him with us and for making our lives so much richer and fuller because of John.
May his memory be eternal!

John sat next to me in church. I did not know him well but I felt that I was near a truly good person. We hardly spoke more than a greeting and best wishes but his spirit spoke volumes. He definitely had bragging rights to many achievements but I never heard a word. On Memorial Day he came to church in his dress uniform. I have seldom seen a more decorated veteran. We looked at each other; he saw the recognition in my eyes and he just smiled and we shook hands. I will miss him very much as a brother in Christ, closer than my own blood brother. I hope he will pray me into a seat near him in heaven and that I might be able to be as giving to others as he was and may be more so now that he is home at last in heaven. May his memory be eternal and may the angels lead him into paradise. Peace.

I know that words are inadequate at a time like this, but I wanted you to know how very sorry my family is for your loss. May you find comfort in God's promise at Isaiah 41:10.
